A NOTE FROM SCHOOL NURSE
If you are traveling during Pchum Ben, please take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family members from illnesses. During the rainy season, Cambodia’s top three health concerns are the common cold, influenza (the flu), and dengue fever. These illnesses are viral infections that can affect your health and well-being. Mosquitoes transmit dengue fever, while respiratory droplets spread the common cold and the flu. They all can cause fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. Dengue fever, however, can also lead to severe complications such as bleeding, shock, and organ failure.
To protect yourself and your family members from dengue fever, the common cold, and the flu during the Cambodian Pchum Ben holiday, you should follow these tips:
-Avoid mosquito bites by wearing clothes that cover your body, using insect repellent on your skin and clothing, sleeping under a mosquito net, and staying in well-screened rooms.
-Remove any stagnant water around your home or the areas where you will be staying over the holiday.
-Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of germs.
-Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze, and dispose of the tissue.
-Avoid close contact with people who are sick or have symptoms of dengue fever the common cold, or the flu.
-Seek medical attention if you develop signs of dengue fever, such as high fever, rash, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.
*Please notify me if your child is diagnosed with dengue fever (ssor@asianhope.org).
